Wrotham Park (pronounced , ROO-təm)[1] is a neo-Palladian English land firm in the parish of South Mimms, Hertfordshire. It lies south of the boondocks of Potters Bar, 17 miles (27 km) from Hyde Park Corner in central London. The house was designed by Isaac Ware in 1754 for Admiral John Byng, the fourth son of Admiral George Byng, 1st Viscount Torrington, and remains in the family at the heart of a 2,500-acre (10 km2) estate. It is 1 of the largest private houses about London inside the M25 freeway. Its distinctive exterior has been used over 60 times as a filming location.

The house is listed equally a Class II* building on the National Heritage List for England, and its landscaped park and gardens are Grade 2 listed on the Register of Celebrated Parks and Gardens.[2] [3]

Originally function of an estate known as Pinchbank (too Birchbank), first recorded in Middlesex in 1310 and endemic in the 17th and early on 18th centuries by the Howkins family, the belongings passed to Thomas Reynolds, a director of the South Sea Company, who renamed the estate Strangeways. His son, Francis, sold the property to Admiral John Byng who had the house rebuilt by Isaac Ware in 1754.[4]

Admiral John Byng changed the proper noun of the firm to Wrotham Park in honour of the original family home in Wrotham, Kent.[5] Byng never had an opportunity to alive in retirement at Wrotham. Following his inadequately equipped trek to relieve Menorca from the French during the Seven Years' War, he was court martialled and executed in 1757. This event was satirised past Voltaire in his novel Candide. In Portsmouth, Candide witnesses the execution of an officeholder by firing squad; and is told that "in this country, information technology is wise to kill an admiral from time to fourth dimension to encourage the others" (cascade encourager les autres).[four]

The business firm was inherited by John Byng, 1st Earl of Strafford in 1847 and passed to his son, George Byng, 2nd Earl of Strafford, on the first earl'southward death in 1860.[4] A disastrous burn down in 1883 burned slowly plenty to permit retrieval of the contents of the house, but gutted it.[4] The house was rebuilt exactly as it was and all the same remains in the hands of the Byng family unit.[half-dozen]

Wrotham Park has frequently been used as a filming location.[7]

  • In Hart to Hart, flavor 5, Episode 5, "Harts and Hounds" (1 November 1983).[ citation needed ]
  • Used as stand-in for Doddington Hall, abode of Jock Delves Broughton, in the film White Mischief (1987).[ commendation needed ]
  • As Hanbury Hall in "Ghost in the Car", a 1989 episode of ITV's Inspector Morse.[eight]
  • Location scenes for the ITV Jeeves and Wooster 1990–1993 telly series were shot at Wrotham Park. Both the interior of Brinkley Court and the interior and exterior of Chuffnell Hall (Episodes 4 and 5, Serial 2) were filmed at that place.[ citation needed ]
  • Used equally a stand-in for Buckingham Palace in the opening scene of the 1991 comedy film Rex Ralph.[9]
  • Used for Bridget Jones's Diary (2001).[10]
  • In Robert Altman's Gosford Park (2001), including exterior scenes and the staircase, dining room, library and living room. It was also used for the filming of Peter'due south Friends.[ citation needed ]
  • Used for the 2004 movie version of Vanity Fair.[ commendation needed ]
  • Location scenes for the BBC TV production of Alan Hollinghurst's The Line of Beauty (2006), including the exterior, lawns, dining room, library, drawing room and living room.[ citation needed ]
  • Location scenes for the BBC Tv set miniseries Sense and Sensibility (2008) were also shot at Wrotham Park. The exterior of Norland Park was filmed at that place.[11]
  • Used for the 2011 version of Jane Eyre [ commendation needed ]
  • Location scenes for the BBC Television receiver product The 60 minutes (2011) were also shot at Wrotham Park.[ citation needed ]
  • Used for the 2012 picture version of Swell Expectations.[ commendation needed ]
  • In 2013–14, location scenes for the comic activeness spy movie Kingsman: The Hush-hush Service were shot at Wrotham Park. It was too used in its sequel Kingsman: The Aureate Circle during which it appears completely destroyed in a CGI explosion. The house will again appear in The King'southward Human, a prequel to the original flick.[ citation needed ]
  • Used for the ITV production of Mr Selfridge (2014).[ citation needed ]
  • Agatha Christie's Poirot episodes "The Run a risk of Johnnie Waverly"[12] and Third Daughter were filmed hither.[ citation needed ]
  • Location scenes in The Admirer, as ane of the estates shown as Mickey describes his operation to Matthew while driving in the Land Rover to i of his farms.[thirteen]
  • Location scenes for the idents of the Dave channel were shot at Wrotham Park.[ commendation needed ]
  • Wrotham Park's drawing room featured as the interior of Buckingham Palace in the Downton Abbey movie. It was too featured in multiple seasons of the Netflix serial The Crown, equally Clarence House and Gatcombe Park, domicile of the Princess Royal.[ citation needed ]
  • The second flavor of Bridgerton (2022) introduces the titular family's state home Aubrey Hall, with Wrotham Park standing in for it.[ citation needed ]
